What Makes Self-Driving Cars Autonomous?
Simply put, it works like magic. Nothing like most other gadgets or machines that work using a well-defined set of computer codes, it’s difficult to discern how a self-driving vehicle makes a decision. We can’t dig deep into an autonomous car’s computer code and find a conventional “if-then” statement. You won’t find something like, “if the car’s tail/brake lights in front activate, then apply the brakes.” It’s because a driverless car decides what to do based on its learning versus the data of a whiz computer programmer. Such knowledge is stored into a black box called an artificial neural network. Artificial neural networks are computers that mimic a human brain.
