Tiny Cars in Europe At Risk of Being Endangered
Americans typically prefer big burly but less elegant vehicles, while Europeans usually go for tiny but sophisticated ones. But that statement is going to change pretty soon, at least in Europe because carmakers are beginning to doubt their small car method to address expensive new legislation about safety and tailpipe emissions, specifically CO2 output. Some forecasters think that the upcoming rules will be catastrophic to car manufacturers with a stake in Europe. Many believe that small cars dominating the streets of Europe will be a distant memory or quite uncertain. In fact, Opel will not pursue with its Adam and Karl minicars, while Citroen and Peugeot reported their C1 and 108 minicars will likely fail. Also, it looks like Ford will halt exporting to Europe their Indian-made Ka+ small car. VW heads have also confirmed privately that they're coming up with combustion-engine options of the Up minicar. This will likely translate to bidding goodbye to the gas-powered Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii. The main issue really is that the tech needed to adhere to the new rules, which will cost thousands of euros per car. Small cars just don't have the price points and margins to cover the expenses unlike big cars do.
