Re-imagining Car Interiors for the Autonomous Driving Age
When carmakers launch autonomous vehicles in the next 10 years, drivers and passengers might find the sleek, minimalist design a little USS Enterprise-esque. Every button will likely be located on the driver’s armrest. Dashboard knobs, buttons and other controls, maybe even storage bins will all be a thing of the past. At the recently concluded Frankfurt car show, 2 major car seat manufacturers, Adient and Faurecia showed their cockpit models for autonomous vehicles. Their ideas point to a growing consensus regarding how drivers are going to control their cars. The two also agree that suppliers will also have to revolutionize nearly all main parts in the cockpit, such as the steering wheel, airbags, etc.
