Hyundai Visualizing Touchscreen Steering Wheels
Car interiors are slowly evolving into huge screens. Carmakers are turning their infotainment touchscreens into bigger and bigger versions. Plus, they're including totally digital instrument cluster and different touchscreens for climate controls. But the question is, are they really necessary? Hyundai recently showed a virtual cockpit report to illustrate that they're trying to innovate its interiors. The Japanese carmaker chose the i30 as its base car and demonstrated what touchscreens can actually look like on steering wheels in the future. The dual screens are rather colossal—with each one occupying the whole side of the wheel. Nonetheless, it looks cleaner and more minimalist compared to those a buttons you usually see. And the touch controls change according to the driving scenario and the data shown in the instrument cluster. Drivers can also personalize the control design for max of 5 touch buttons per display. This innovation precedes the automaker's past work on virtual cockpits. As this is still fairly new and still in the early prototype stage, let's not expect to see touchscreen steering wheels anytime soon.
