General Motors Coming Up with External Airbags to Protect Pedestrians
There’s a recently issued US patent revealing GM might be working on adding external airbags to shield pedestrians from crashes with the front side of its cars through a discrete door placed along the side fender right under the hood and just forward of the A-pillar. It’s apparently called "fender-located pedestrian protection airbag" that General Motors first filed for patent protection back in 2014. GM has zero statements to give yet about these airbags yet but they deem these could be a crucial engineering solution in the future. And while it seems this is a new area or pursuit for GM products, the car industry has actually been looking at the use of external airbags for many years now.
